Amazon Wildfires

The Amazon Rainforest has now been on fire for the last three weeks. In this time, there have been around 80,000 fires causing unprecedented damage to the wildlife, biodiversity and people of the rainforest.

Known widely as the ‘lungs of the Earth’, the Amazon produces approximately 20% of the world’s oxygen. This means the fires in this region are not just a local issue – this crisis will have a global impact.

Many charities, and donors, are gearing up to help. If you would like to help the cause, here are a few charities you could consider giving to:

Amazon Rainforest Conservancy

The Amazon Rainforest Conservancy protects the Amazon and its inhabitants. They hope that with the support of donors they can increase the area of land in their care, and increase the size of their conservation zone. They work to protect this area of wildlife and biodiversity through conservation projects, as well as research and education. You can find out more about their response to the Amazon Rainforest fires here

International Conservation fund of Canada

The International Conservation Fund of Canada conserves nature in the tropics, as well as other at risk areas worldwide. Their Kayapo Project is focused on protecting the Brazilian Amazon by enabling the Kayapo indigenous people to continue to protect 11 million hectares of their lands from deforestation.

Amazon Watch

Amazon Watch protect the Amazon, and our climate, by supporting indigenous people. They partner with indigenous and environmental organizations to campaign for human rights and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological systems.

One Tree Planted

One Tree Planted fights deforestation through one simple act – planting trees around the world. For every dollar donated, they plant one tree, making it easy to envision the impact of your donation.

World Wildlife Fund

In light of the Amazon fires, the World Wildlife Fund is putting pressure on the countries of that region to take swift action to protect the Amazon, combat deforestation, and reduce the causes of the fires. You can support them by signing their petition, or by making a donation through your Impact Account.
