With Apple’s introduction of the new iPhone 6, it’s likely thousands of Canadians are considering upgrading their phones. That means thousands of unwanted cellphones will either end up in our landfills or gather dust as they sit unused.
Many electronics recycling programs let you to dispose of your phone safely, and even profitably. But did you know you can also donate your old cellphone — or the equivalent cash — to charity? Here are five ways you can dial in to a good cause with your old phone.
Recycle My Cell
Help the environment and support some great causes with Recycle My Cell’s national recycling program for mobile devices. Either drop your old cellphone off at one of the locations across the country, or print out a pre-paid shipping label and mail it in.
This program aggregates charitable initiatives from Bell, MTS, Rogers Communications, Telus, SaskTel, Virgin Mobile Canada and others. Find out more about the charities they’ll support when you donate your phone.
Think Recycle pays money for old cellphones and other electronics. Various charities including the United Way, David Suzuki Foundation, EarthShare and National Service Dogs have partnered with Think Recycle to raise money by collecting recyclable electronics. Free Geek, which started in Portland and has expanded across Canada and the US, includes locations in Vancouver and Toronto. They accept cellphones along with nearly all computers and computer-related hardware, free of charge. Volunteers work to refurbish the hardware and make it available to non-profits through a granting process.
Cell Cycle, which pays cash for old cellphones, also offers a fundraising program for individuals and groups. It also works with charities, like Amnesty International Canada, which has published instructions on how you can support its work for human rights by recycling your phone with Cell Cycle.
