Get in the game at this year’s TechPong tournament
Can ping pong bring world peace? It’s very possible. The 1970s saw ping pong diplomacy play out on the global stage, when players from the United States and China competed together at the height of tension between their two nations.
At the very least, the Olympic sport can bring people to the table. Charitable Impact’s TechPong tournament aims to inspire giving among the tech community, engaging players in a fun evening of play while raising money for the causes people care most about. Organizing fundraising events can help get your team to the qualifying donation minimum of $2,000. Here at Charitable Impact (CHIMP), we are opting for the Great CHIMP Bake-Off.
You don’t need to be an experienced player to participate in Vancouver’s most epic charity ping pong tournament. In the lead up to the November 7th event at Science World, you can try out your serve at local haunts like Vancouver’s Back and Forth Bar.
Official rules of ping pong play can be complicated but we keep it simple. We encourage any kind of hand hold for your racket (including the penhold, the shakehand, and the elusive seemiller grips)—as long as you can get the ball over the net and onto the table’s field of play.
Need some inspiration? One of our champions from previous years, Rippu Gupta Rajkumar Gupta from Copperleaf Technologies Inc., first started playing the game at age 12. Rippu then went on to a decade of play on the provincial team. Her advice: practice lots and just simply enjoy the journey!
Here’s how she describes TechPong: “A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. One of the best places to collaborate, meet new people, get to know other tech companies out there and most importantly have a lot of fun. Definitely a unique experience. Icing on the cake—this is all done for a cause.”
What’s more, if ping pong is not your thing, you can come as a fan and enjoy the entertainment. There will be raucous games — offering chances to win charitable dollars towards your favourite causes — music, and circus-style entertainment.
We can’t wait to see you there! Stay tuned for more details and some fundraising tips.
