Top impact charities in Canada for 2018

Everyone has something in the world they would like to change, or a problem they would like to solve. However, the number of Canadians who give to charity is continuing to decline.

Why is this?

Well, a study done by Angus Reid on the state of giving in Canada suggests the decline in giving is due to a lack of confidence in the charity sector. 61% of Canadians believe that they would give more money to charity if they “felt more confident about the whole thing”.

Every year, Charity Intelligence undertake a detailed analysis of charities in Canada, so we can see how our money is being used and the impact it could create. They highlight the top impact charities for the year – which is those that deliver high returns on every dollar donated.

These are the Top Impact Charities in Canada for 2018:

Aunt Leah’s Place

Aunt Leah’s Place help kids in foster care and young mothers achieve a better future by providing guidance, supported housing, and coaching on essential life skills. They support young people at critical times, to help them realize their potential and become resilient, independent adults.

CUPS

Calgary Urban Project Society provides integrated healthcare, education and housing to those in Calgary living with the adversity of poverty and traumatic events, in order to help them become self-sufficient.

East York Learning Experience

42% of Canadian adults between 16-65 years have low literacy skills, meaning they cannot read or write well enough to apply for jobs, read a newspaper or do banking. East York Learning Experience help adults improve their reading, writing and basic math, and have helped over a thousand adults build better lives.

Eva’s Initiatives For Homeless Youths

Eva’s Initiatives works to address and prevent youth homelessness through providing shelter and support services. They operate three unique facilities in Toronto to provide safe shelter, transitional housing, and programs for 123 young people every night.

Food Banks Canada

Food Banks Canada are dedicated to helping Canadians living with food insecurity. They work with a network of provincial associations, affiliate food banks, and food agencies, and together their network assists over 850,000 Canadians who turn to food banks each month.

Food for Life

Food for Life Canada is a food bank that focuses on redistributing fresh and nutritious foods to local agencies and residents. They collect extra perishable food from grocery stores and restaurants through its ReFresh Foods program, and in 2017, they distributed over 3.3 million pounds of food across Canada.

Fresh Start Recovery

Fresh Start Recovery Centre works with men who are alcoholics, or have drug addictions, and helps them to live healthy and happy lives. They offer programs that include counselling and group facilitated healing to build a strong foundation of recovery.

Indspire

Indspire helps Indigenous students in Canada complete their post-secondary education. They have a vision to enrich Canada through Indigenous education and by inspiring achievement.

JUMP Math

JUMP Math is dedicated to enhancing the potential in children by encouraging an understanding and a love of math in students and educators. They offer educators, tutors and parents complete and balanced materials as well as training to help them reach all students.

Moisson Montreal

Moisson Montreal is Canada’s largest food bank. In 2017, they distributed $80m worth of healthy and nutritious food, that would otherwise be wasted. This food is given free to 247 accredited community organizations to feed children, adults and seniors in need.
