Living Edge Community
The Living Edge Community acts as a food hub, distributing food in the poorest neighbourhoods of Victoria, BC. We do this by holding a biweekly MarketPlace, and a weekly community dinner, which impacts over 280 families. It's estimated we distribute over $350,000 worth of food yearly to the hungry.
The Living Edge Community provides food for the hungry and hope for the heart. We believe in demonstrating compassion and care for the needs of the homeless and those living in poverty in Victoria, BC.
Living Edge does this by acting as a “food hub” and distributes food in the poorest neighbourhoods of Victoria. We are the only food distribution centre offering fresh produce, dairy and meat products bi-weekly. We have developed a network of generous food local suppliers like Hertel’s, Island’s West, The Market on Yates, COBS Bread, Quality Foods, and Thrifty Foods; all businesses who have decided not to trash their "unmarketable" food, but pass it on to the hungry. We are on the leading edge of a world-wide environmental food recovery trend. It is estimated the Living Edge recovers over $350,000 worth of food from distributors and outlets that would have otherwise been discarded, further clogging our landfills and composts - a waste of good, edible food!
With the help of over 100 volunteers, the Living Edge collects perishable food from our sponsors, sorts, washes, packages and displays market-style, under tents at our MarketPlace every Tuesday and Thursday at Quadra Village Community Centre. Over 100 people line up to receive this free, nutritious produce twice a week. Bags are distributed to seniors, single parents, the working poor, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, homeless people, the Moms and Tots Program at Quadra Village.
The collected produce also goes to our creative chefs who produce a nutritious, hot meal for our Sunday Community Dinners at CDI College. We have strived to make this free dinner an enjoyable time of gathering for the community and a safe environment for families. Up to 180 families attend the dinners weekly.
