The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) strives to enrich the lives of Albertans by nurturing a strong appreciation and respect for wildlife. AIWC is a registered charity and non-profit society that has been operating since 1993. We are an accredited vet clinic through the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, specifically dedicated to admitting injured and orphaned wildlife. We are located northwest of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and serve the Calgary region and southern Alberta. A team of wildlife biologists and technicians manages AIWC and receives critical assistance from 2 volunteer veterinarians and over 100 highly trained volunteers. We accept native injured, orphaned, and contaminated wildlife ranging in sizes from hummingbirds to baby moose. 95% of our patients are injured or orphaned due to human activities. Often, wildlife are orphaned by needless “rescuing” of babies who should have been left where they are. The most common causes of injury include: window strikes, vehicular collision, hitting power lines, barbed wire, fishing line entanglement or ingestion, cat and dog attacks, and exposure to toxins.
