Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC
Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC (BGC) has been serving children, youth, and their families in the Lower Mainland for over 80 years. Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. In all our work, we are guided by the core values of belonging, respect, encouragement and support, working together, and speaking out. At our 12 neighbourhood-based Clubs, our young professional staff and trained volunteers connect with children and youth on the kids’ terms, beginning the process of letting them know that they matter, that they are accepted, and that they belong. To kids, the Club feels like a place where they can hang out with their friends (and make new ones!), and do the things that they want to do. The outcomes? They build positive relationships, develop healthy living behaviours, do better at school, and have opportunities to lead. This all happens through a wide range of activities that are not only of interest to kids, but good for them, too: organized sports and physical activity, homework clubs, creative arts and crafts, cooking and nutrition programs, and leadership development. To complete the picture, BGC offers a wilderness summer camp (Camp Potlatch), youth substance abuse counselling, youth and family counselling, employment programs, and parent programs to further support our children, youth, and families, depending on their circumstances. With all our services, BGC maintains a policy that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay so that money is never an issue. Across the Lower Mainland we currently serve 1,000 kids per day, and more than 12,000 children, youth, and families annually.
