The Group's Purpose

The Maddie Project (www.themaddieproject.ca) is a community effort in support of youth struggling with depression and other mental health related concerns. Founded in memory of Madeline Grace German Coulter.

In less than two years, the Maddie Project has engaged a community in conversation about youth mental health, enabling multiple local events and fundraising initiatives including raising over $1.3 million towards youth mental health services.

This Spring, The Maddie Project and Skylark Children, Youth and Families, a local walk-in clinic for youth, have partnered together to raise $200,000 to maximize the walk–in clinic’s capacity to provide more local children and youth with uninhibited access to counseling when they need it.

Today, the Walk-in clinic is open 6 days per week for a total of 22 hours – 55% capacity. Additional funding, will allow the walk in clinic to increase service hours to 40 hours per week and expand the age range to include children as young as 6 years old.

How to Help

• 1 in 5 children in Ontario struggles with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harm and eating disorders and only 20% of those kids get access to help.

• 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence.

• While mental illness constitutes more than 15% of the burden of disease in Canada, these illnesses receive only slightly over 5% of health care dollars.

• 62% of young people who attended our walk-in only needed to come one time
