The Group's Purpose

Alberta Ballet was a vision and dream of two women as childhood friends in Edmonton. Ruth Carse and Muriel Taylor learned ballet together as teenagers and left the province to dance professionally.

But they believed that this art - born in the courts of France - truly had a place in the prairies of Alberta. They would return to Edmonton to open a dance school. The school's success and reputation for exceptional performance prompted the founding of Alberta Ballet in 1966.

Today, Alberta Ballet's vision is the same one held by its co-founders when they were first teaching ballet classes on Edmonton's Jasper Avenue:
- to give Alberta the same professional ballet events seen in world class cities.
- to give ballet students a professional dance company to showcase their talents a just reward for the hours spent perfecting the craft.

Over the years, Alberta Ballet received international acclaim for its innovative productions, most recently for its signature "Pop Ballet" series, collaborations with contemporary music icons. The newest pop ballet will be a sweeping Canadian oeuvre, inspired by the music of Canadian poet an singer, Gordon Lightfoot. The production will resonate with audiences from coast to coast to coast, a grand finale for Alberta Ballet's 50th anniversary season!

The Our 50 Community is about connecting Albertans with both the legacy of Alberta Ballet and with a vision for the innovative art to come.

This special milestone community in the Alberta Ballet family will launch Alberta Ballet into the next 50 years of critical acclaim!
